SAIGON HEAT

The NFL’s Seattle Seahawks have their “12th man” spurring them to victory. The NBA’s Los Angeles Lakers have the Lakers Nation backing them. Liverpool’s Kopites are famed throughout the soccer world.
And now, the ASEAN Basketball League (ABL) has the latest addition to these groups of super-fans; the Saigon Heat’s most boisterous supporters, the Rusty Bucket Bad Boys.
Entrenched squarely behind the visiting team’s bench at every Heat home game, Canadian Pete Neufeld is all over the visiting squad from the opening tipoff. References to a player’s college career, most recent shot on the court, even their lunch habits are all fair game. Neufeld does whatever it takes to get under the skin of visiting players.
“We bought the whole section (behind that bench),” said Neufeld, with the reference to Rusty Bucket being the bar he owns in Phu My Hung, a short ride from home games. “We Google other teams, harass them.”
A recent game featuring the visiting Westports Malaysia Dragons led to chants of “KFC, KFC” whenever they made a bad play. Neufeld explained it was owing to some of the Rusty Bucket lads seeing Malaysia players ordering up fried chicken at nearby Crescent Mall the day before the game.
Fellow Canadian and Bad Boy stalwart Devon Morrissey bought season tickets two years ago after following Canada’s lone NBA team, the Toronto Raptors, for years before moving to Ho Chi Minh City.
“The Heat are amazing, and cheering loudly definitely helps the team,” he said.
Watching the Bad Boys taunt the Dragons was pretty comical, with “that’s how it’s done” every time the Heat sank a free throw. Regardless of the result on the court, Saigon fans win whenever the Bad Boys are on their game.
You can see them in action when the Heat take on the Singapore Slingers Sept. 12 at the Canadian International School.
